Materials Engineer

AI SpaceFactory is a NASA-partnered, multi-planetary building company, developing large scale 3D printing technologies for Earth and Space applications. The right fit for this role is a hands-on materials scientist or engineer, with experience in academic or commercial research. The ideal candidate has experience selecting materials and designing experiments, as well as working hands-on to conduct those experiments, processing material and preparing samples. You are effective at working collaboratively and independently, can self-manage and are willing to take ownership of your projects and accountability for your results.  

What you’ll do:    

  • Research, formulate, and test materials for Earth and Lunar ISRU 3D printing applications 

  • Work as part of an multi-disciplinary team on commercial product development and R&D initiatives

  • Collaborate with NASA scientists in researching and calculating yields of potential ISRU processes

  • Design and execute experiments independently to justify decision-making  

  • Collect and interpret data systematically and formally present findings  

  • Troubleshoot a range of materials issues on-the-fly and apply corrective action  

  • Participate in team discussions and brainstorming sessions  

  

What you have:  

The ideal candidate has at least 2 years of professional experience in materials science (more experienced candidates are encouraged to apply, with the role modified accordingly) and has a BS or MS in Materials Science or Materials, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering. Candidates with prior experience in large-scale additive manufacturing (FDM) and/or thermoplastic extrusion processes will be given special consideration.  

·        Hands-on materials development experience  

·        Experience with thermoplastics/thermoplastic extrusion  

·        Experience working with and analyzing material behavior in cryogenic and high temperature environments (-200 to 400º C)

·        Familiarity with test and laboratory equipment, such as vacuum chambers, chemical hoods and MARK-10 load testers  

·        Meticulous record keeping and organizational skills  

·        Prior experience with recycled materials and/or ISRU is a plus 

·        Status as a US Person (Citizen or Permanent Resident) required for Space-related R&D
